new year, new home, new ... leaf?

Before moving we came to the consensus that this was a great opportunity to start anew. Bring back the good things, and weed out the bad things. Pretty positive that the latter needs constant tackling. But heh, can't be quitters now can we? Now that I'm coming out of my "Oh my I can not do one more thing!" funk, it's becoming a reality. We started our bedtime reading again, man I forgot how much I love this, and Keys for Kids. You can get 1 free Keys for Kids at the website, and I can vouch that it's been a wonderful experience for us, the kids really relate to the stories and biblical principles that are applied.

Our current bedtime story is Into the Land of the Unicorns by Bruce Coville. So far it's a great success, everyone is enthralled with what's going to happen next. The novels I've read that had all three kids this excited I can list on one hand. In fact I can list them for you. Charlotte's Web and Stink Series. It's mostly their different personalities, attention spans, and ages that have made some books not as captivating.

I made yellow cake cupcakes with chocolate frosting the other day, all from scratch. I've always thought, WHAT is the big deal with yellow cake and chocolate frosting, why is it everywhere, why does everyone like it, why is it yellow? So instead of just wondering for the next ten years, we made some using Bakerella's recipe.

and Miss Pickle wasn't allowed to have any.

Poor thing. We really are mean parents, though I'm sure Jeremy would gladly sneak her some of this confectionery evil if I left the room. In actuality the two pictures have nothing to do with the other, except for that she was wearing a cupcake outfit that day, which was coincidence. I just think she's darling when she's crying. It may seem I take crying photos frequently, but that wouldn't be true. To further prove that, I found this video of Miss Pickle as a newborn... two days old.

I miss that. :(

I've been making baby food for Miss Pickle with success. She hasn't decided her opinion yet of food. She gets all excited to take a bite, then shudders when it's in her mouth, and even more so when she swallows. When Ais was a baby, me and my friend Jodi set out to win a contest that She Knows was hosting for highest post count. We both placed, and I won a Baby Fresh kit. I'd never used it until now. The ice cube style trays with lids are very nice, they help keep the food fresh while it's freezing, and the cookbook seems promising.

Sweet Potato pureed. tasty.

I make her Rice Cereal as well with great success. I got instruction from here but needed mine less thick and more soupy, so I changed the measurements thus:

1/4c grounded brown rice (used my Magic Bullet)
1 3/4c. water

Boiled the water, added the rice, lowered the heat, and stirred constantly for several minutes, I think it was about 7 minutes when mine was done. I tasted it to see, and probably kept my heat a bit too high cause I have a lame stove. *whimper* i miss my stove back at the old house. /end *whimper*

We finally got internet hooked up to the main computer (Woot!), and spent part of last night watching shows on Hulu. I heart Chuck. Jeremy of course got excited to play Halo online with our friends back home, but with the time difference it didn't work out until 1:40 am our time, so he hasn't got to do that yet.

Today was our first day back to lessons, and it went super well. If I drew one hundred smiles to emphasis how great the day was, it wouldn't even come close. William wanted to learn to read, so we jumped in with the Bob Books, he read all of Mat, and I'm super proud of him! It was the kind of day you dream of when you think of homeschooling your kids, all dreamy, with learning, and fun. William even asked me to write on his paper "Fun school day!"

I started on my Motivated Mom's List again. It's basically all the chores you need to do in your home, in a nice list you can check off.... man I like checking things off... check.check. gives me some weird thrill. I'm weird, but not alone in this.

nearly perfect

We had a deliciously wonderful Christmas. So simple, so sweet, so stress-free. We spent all day Christmas in our pjs, at our house with rotisserie chicken in the crockpot, opening presents, playing with our presents and watching a movie. We played as a family, we played in groups, and this year I got a toy of my own. Jeremy and the kids gifted me with an ipod touch. He thought I'd enjoy it, so I can bring music with me where ever I go; a more perfect gift could not be given. Now I can listen to my audio books on the go, which is exactly I did when we drove to Chicago on Friday night. It will do well to help with my goal of 2009 to read/listen to more books. Thinking of joining audible, anyone have any expertise in audiobooks? how about recommendations on what I should listen to next?

Our Christmas holiday had a little of everything...

eating wrapping paper

magic

she truly believes in fairies, and tells me how she saw one once.

family

snuggling under the Christmas lights

My Dad and s.mom gifted us with a 3 hour (yacht) tour in Chicago on Lake Michigan. It will have dj music, buffet, and entertainment. I'm quite excited for our evening out which includes the kids being babysat at my dad's, and even over night if we wish to stay in the city. Will plan to use in the summer when Miss Pickle is 1 and able to stay overnight with someone other than me. ;)

I feel blessed this year, and while a little melancholy that the year is coming to a close, that my children, myself, my parents are all getting a little older, I'm quite happy with my little life. On Dec. 26th it's been 9 years since Jeremy said something along the lines of 'uh will you be my girl'

Leelee's Boots Pattern

Free for personal use only.

Find this pattern here on Ravelry.

When my oldest was a baby, she was gifted a pair of chunky fabric bootees that were adorable on her chubby feet. With this image in mind I began searching for a good pattern, I found loads of great patterns. They all came short in regards to my worsted cotton, and size 6 dpn's though.

So came Leelee's boots. There is no rocket science in these, I just wanted them to stay on, be cute, and work with her outfits. They are knit in the round, top down, use worsted weight, tie with i-cord, and hopefully stay on your little one's feet as they do my own little Leelee's feet. Added bonus she loves to play with them.

As always I'd love to see your projects; I'm available to answer any questions, and most importantly Happy Knitting!

three things this thursday

"give me a moment for pity sake."

As a mom, ever feel that you give so much, exert so much of yourself, your time, your energy, just to fall into bed and have the baby wake up an hour later. I just feel spent. Packing up 98% of the house alone, unpacking majority alone, four/five kids (depending on Dylan) alone, and all I want to do is just relax, on my own, doing what I want, how I want it, alone, just give me ten minutes. Even last year I would give myself a moment to rejuvenate myself even if it was just a book in the tub, but I haven't had time for that since before the trip to Chicago in October.

My friend Michelle told me about an idea for blogging, a three things this thursday idea, and I've been working with her and I believe I'm in the right to say we are both excited about this.

Then today arrives. Jeremy has the day off, and I imagine some other stay at home moms know what chaos a husband home brings to a schedule. It's not bad mind you, it's just not the normal routine. What we normally do, we don't usually do on his days off. Which made me think I wouldn't get to participate in the blog post.

And yet here I am. Jeremy laid Miss Pickle down for a nap, then took all the wild things to go shopping for my Christmas present. And I'm here, alone. My only interruption is Jeremy calling for directions.

Let's do it!

Thing 1 It would seem I have misplaced my box with cookie sheets, muffin pans, cake pans, and recipes. I'm not concerned that it's literally lost, more so that I just can't find it. I can solve part of the problem by purchasing new cookie sheets. Partly warranted since they are ancient, one I actually grew up with and it's bent up like a bowl, and I don't remember what the other one looked like, it's been too long since I've seen it.

The problem was the recipe. You see, a few years ago I bought this Betty Crocker holiday cookbook that's in the check out aisle amongst tens of others. I tried the sugar cookie recipe, and instantly it was a great success. To understand the triumph in this, you need to understand the history. I grew up never making sugar cookies, one year I went to my aunt cindy and uncle danny's house and we made holiday cookies from scratch and rolled out dough. I swore in that moment to always make cookies with my future kids. Fast forward, I met my husband, and heard the declaration that his mom made the best sugar cookies evah. Which instantly sets up this weird, seemingly normal competitive drive to make something equally or better than his moms.

Afterall I was married to this man for a seemingly long time to come, and I better be able to produce some good cookies, or deal with the whining. So it started immediately. Sugar cookies upon sugar cookies. Ones with corn syrup (I liked them a lot but they weren't like his moms).. Yes yes, I know what you might think, why not just ask for the recipe you say, but without details, the recipe was not available to me, it was sugar cookie monopoly, I declare!

That Betty Crocker holiday book contained a great sugar cookie recipe, it's not like my mil's recipe, it passes my husband's test, and now I don't have to hear whining. And this year it's lost to me inside a misplaced box (Drat those sharpies that went dry and led to unmarked boxes! WHY did I think I would remember one box from another!) I checked Betty Crockers site and found *mixed* recipes upon more *mixed* recipes. And then, in my last desperate swagbuck search, I found this little gem.

I believe that it's the recipe. I know the recipe had confectionery sugar in it, I know it had almond extract in it. I'll know more on Sunday when we bake our holiday cookies, but I dare say I'm excited to believe that's the recipe. On a side note we were supposed to make the cookies today, but it got bumped to Sunday, making it more desperate of a search earlier in the day, then now when I have days to still find my cookbook.

Thing 2 "I want a golden goose and I want it now!" Who can forget Veruca Salt. That is a girl who gets what she wants. And as much as I enjoy her on screen character; I've never felt inclined to raise a child like her. And yet this morning while Miss Pickle threw herself backwards, kicked out her stiff chunky legs, and cried, I thought.. oh my a little Veruca.

You see, she is only 6 months old, apparently though she believes she's 2. She wants what she wants, when she wants it. And she actually throws a little tantrum if she doesn't get it. I'm mean and horrible and do not give her back a dangerous hazard to stop the crying, while Jeremy is a softy and gives her what she wants (kidding, kind of, erm he doesn't give her hazards at least). I don't really believe you can spoil a baby per say, but if you could, I think Jeremy would be well on his way to doing so.

Thing 3 I made another bunny for a friend, that is the same patter as Miss Pickle's that I made earlier this year. Cat, Rabbit, and Bear from Natural Knits (free at Knitting Daily). I used DPN's this time so it had a smidge less seaming. He turned out cute, and he came off as having a shy personality. Y'know as much as an inanimate object can. I'm just really glad to have him finished with all his limbs intact. Sewing up a stuffed animal is a bit gruesome looking, legs, arms, tails, and ears scattered around the room.

The pom-pom tush came from this tutorial, very easy to do. For the face I used the French Knot technique and as I can never remember how to do this, I used this tutorial from Purl Bee.

Now you go post three things on your blog, add your link here so we can all read it.
